Five General Types of Feed Additives
Generally, feed additives are supplements given to farm animals which enhance their health. They come in different forms.
 |
Technological additives. These additives do not necessarily add to the nutritional value of the feed. Rather,
they are designed to handle other aspects of
feed additives, such as hygiene and food
preservation. |
 |
Sensory additives. These additives stimulate the appetite of farm animals by improving the palatability of the feed. They add taste and color and make it more likely that the animals will voluntarily eat the feed. |
 |
Nutritional additives. These additives add nutrients, in concentrated form, to the feed in order
to achieve an optimal level of health for
the farm animal. |
 |
Zootechnical additives. These additives help farm animals
to achieve an optimal level of health by
helping them to absorb the maximum level of
nutrients. These types of additives are
often composed of enzymes, which enhance the
condition of the farm animal's intestinal
tract , thereby improving the absorption of
nutrients into the system, without actually
providing the nutrients. |
 |
Coccidiostats and Histomonostats. These additives contribute to and maintain the intestinal health of farm animals. However, they are not antibiotics. |
